The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Young Adult Friction

Low-key and intimate indie pop has traditionally seemed born of necessity-- lashed together with chewing gum and bailing wire and served up with imperfections intact (sometimes the imperfections were half the point)-- whereas Pains made cranking out impossibly catchy three-chord gems seem as natural and effortless as breathing. They are anything but ramshackle. Case in point is "Young Adult Friction", pulled from the full-length and now being released as a single. There's not a drop of sweat on it. Each of its pleasures-- guitars with the perfect jangle, a high-hat with just the right amount of analog roll-off on the high end, a catchy chorus that eventually becomes a chant-along anthem, a (let's face it) clever title-- is delivered with the efficiency of a sleek and beautifully designed machine.

"We had an older song that was essentially similar to this one but a bit slower that I completely forgot about but heard a fraction of on one of our practice tapes. Then we recorded some demos about a year ago and I showed this to the others in the group (for the first time) right before we hit the record button. Brad made up lyrics on the spot. It's become a good warm-up song for our live set. It's thoroughly a doo-wop inspired song but there's a tinge of R&B in there somewhere. Doo Woppabilly. Fuzzabilly-Wop?"

On the band-name wince-o-meter, the Papercuts rank just below the Leapfrogging a Parking Meter and Hitting Your Balls on Its and the Digging Too Deep in Your Nose and Getting a Nosebleeds. But that hasn't stopped the reverbed-out San Francisco sad-pop project. You Can Have What You Want, the third album from Jason Quever's band, will be out on April 14. In the US, Gnomonsong will release the album, and it'll be on Memphis Industries in Europe. The record will feature collaborations with Alex Scally of frequent Papercuts tourmates Beach House.
